After Midnight(Review)[Terrifying Theatrical Tuesday]

There were two movies I viewed during Valentine's weekend, Hulu's recent Into The Dark entry Tentacles, and this movie. After Midnight had more substance and heart. I do plan on doing a review of Into The Dark series down the line, but Tentacles suffers from the same issue most of the entries have where it has a cool concept but then it just fumbles it at the end. Also, we are in 2021, there's really no reason why we should be dealing with bad CGI, I mean I am talking 90's CGI bad. But enough said. Let's talk about After Midnight.

This is romantic horror about a man who starts dating a woman, and she suddenly leaves him with just a note. He is trying to deal with the fact she is gone, but also dealing with a mysterious monster attacking his door each night.

As you watch him cope with everything going on, and his interactions with various town folks, you start to wonder if the monster is just a figment of his imagination, or maybe just a metaphor. My theory based on everything that happens that it is very much a metaphor especially when it is revealed the relationship was not exactly a happy one. They would make you think that but we are only viewing it from the male perspective. In a sense, when it is all said and done, the man is the one responsible for summoning the monster.

The creature effects when it does appear are pretty good, and the lead actor does well in his role. This is where the film gets it heart because you get the emotional aspect of what he is going through, and initially you emphasize with his plight. That's until you get the other side of the story. And really, this is a very familiar situation because when it comes to relationships, and when things go bad, we usually get one side. So we are quick to demonize the other person without getting their side of the story. This is the scenario we are seeing being presented to us, just in the guise of a monster movie.

Definitely worth checking out in my opinion. It is currently streaming on Shudder if you want to watch it. If you already seen After Midnight, feel free to leave your thoughts below.
