Amulet(Review)[Terrifying Theatrical Tuesday]
This is one of those weird atmospheric horrors, and a promising debut from first time director Romola Garai. The movie is about an ex soldier who is homeless and he ends up being hired on as a handyman to help a daughter who is caring for her ailing mother. However, he begins to realize not all is what it seems.
This is a slow burn horror, where the movie relies on the sweeping camera work as you follow this man and watch as he interacts with people. You are taken through flashbacks he has of back from when he was still a soldier. There are times when there is just complete silence, and it adds to the unsettling nature of this movie. This man is suffering from guilt, and it's more than just from his time as a soldier. He even has a romantic fling with the daughter which ends up doomed from the beginning. Then there is a dastardly nun involved which you will want to keep an eye on her.
More and more is slowly revealed as the movie goes on, and by the time the man realizes the true nature of his plight, it is far too late. The real kicker is the man does deserve everything that happens to him, and you can infer that he has been put into his own personal hell. The ending really shows that and will leave you breathless. My feeling is this was the director's attempt to show you what she is capable of, and I love to see other films from her once she fully settled in as she shows a lot of potential.
If you are the type to like those strange horrors that rely on atmosphere more than dialogue to deliver it's frights, than this is the movie for you. It is very beautiful to look at, and with a haunting choir adding to it in certain moments, it will give you goosebumps. It is currently streaming free on Hulu, so I would say definitely no harm in checking this one out. If you already seen Amulet, feel free to leave your thoughts below!
