Annihilation (Review)[Weirdo Wednesdays]

Updated: Jun 24, 2020

When a comet crash lands on Earth and hits a lighthouse, a strange phenomenon occurs called ‘the Shimmer’. The Shimmer is basically a field vortex that is growing on a daily basis that is shrouded by an indescribable color. And the only affirmation we have is that whatever enters never exits. Except for one single soldier. This soldier returns unresponsive with extreme memory loss and quickly begins convulsing when he returns to his wife, Lena. When she has him taken to the hospital, his research team briefs her on the mission and a rundown of The Shimmer. Lena (played by Natalie Portman) volunteers to enter the Shimmer with a team. She is a biologist, and the team is composed of an anthropologist, a psychologist, a surveyor, and a linguist – and the team is entirely female. Once inside, we quickly learn that the rules of nature don’t apply. And on a molecular level, everything inside seems to be refracting itself and growing. This movie is a trip, and one hell of a fun ride. It is thought provoking and beautifully shot, with an ending that leaves the entire audience talking for weeks. If you haven’t had the chance to see this film, I highly recommend you do. It has some haunting imagery and arguably one of the scariest monsters to appear in a film in 2018. 5/5 ‘Til Next Time, Auther: Mike Cleopatra
