Cloverfield(Review)[Twisted Throwback Thursday]

With all the buzz surrounding the upcoming Godzilla vs Kong movie, I decided it would be fitting to discuss another giant monster film which is hands down my favorite known as Cloverfield. This is a found footage movie documenting as an giant creature mysteriously appears and attacks New York.

First, let's talk about the marketing of this film. From the get go, there was an entire universe built surrounding the mysteries of the creature and different tidbits about the film itself. There was an ARG(known as Augmented Reality Game) where the players where given websites or USB drives that would direct them to clues, and those who decoded the clues was thus given more of a backstory.

I absolutely loved the fact that we have this entire new monster introduced to us and still to this day, we still don't know exactly how it came to be and why it decided to attack. There are theories surrounding how it was slumbering in the ocean and it woke up due to crashed satellite, theories that this was just a baby monster that attacked because it was confused and disoriented, and even theories there was multiple monsters. There was a later movie called The Cloverfield Paradox that proposes the theory the monster came from another dimension. There's just so much we don't know, and the mystery still persists, and I just still fascinated by it

The creature itself we really don't get a full view of until really the end of the movie. You will catch glimpses of it here and there but not really a full view. You do get a full view of it's spawn however, and those buggers are deadly. Yeah you think a giant monster would be bad enough without having to worry about other critters running around. The subway sequence is still very terrifying when our characters are introduced to that deadly threat.

Yeah, because it's in first person view, there were complaints about the shakycam and motion sickness, but I wasn't really bothered by it. It adds to the realism of the event. That's the gimmick is its presented as something that actually happened and you would almost believe it did.

Through out the film, you get to know the different characters, such Rob, who recently accepted a job in Japan, and the unabashedly adorable Hud. I got a chuckle out of him as his name is a reference to first person shooters with HUD meaning Heads Up Display, and he is responsible for manning the camcorder throughout the movie and documenting the events of the attack. And yes, the Japan bit is a reference to Godzilla, as well as the center of the mysteries surrounding the film. JJ Abrams, who produced this film, even said Cloverfield was inspired because he wanted something like Godzilla just more closer to home.

So yes, if you haven't seen Cloverfield yet, hopefully this convinces you to check it out. I know the found footage aspect might be a deterrent, but don't let that stop you from missing out on an amazing film. Also check out the spiritual sequels such as 10 Cloverfield Lane, which is also absolutely amazing for it's own reasons, and The Cloverfield Paradox, which is okay but it is the weakest film of the series. I am so so disappointed because that film alone prevented us from seeing further installments in this universe. But I digress.
