Corporate Animals(2019)(Review)[Weirdo Wednesdays]
Director Patrick Brice (Creep 1 & 2, The Overnight), gives us a dark comedy about a group of office workers who embark on a team building work ‘cation in New Mexico. When they enter an underground desert cave system with their host Brandon (played by Ed Helms of The Hangover and The Office), the roof shortly caves in, and they are left to their own devices as they try to survive, escape, and grow through the experience.
I was excited to watch this one because the trailer looked great, but I’m afraid that there wasn’t much to this idea besides what I’ve already mentioned. It takes about 30 minutes for our group to finally get trapped underground, and in that first 30 minutes we get a feel for the resentment the workers have for their bitchy boss (Demi Moore), towards each other, and in some cases, towards themselves.
And once they are trapped, there is really nothing more that happens. They do eventually find a way out (Spoiler… I guess), but the way to get there is very underwhelming. I don’t even remember exactly how it plays out. There was one sequence when they find another section of the cave where I remember laughing at something that happens, but that’s about the most I have for this one.
If it was a short film of about 20 or 30 minutes, this could’ve been great. The cast is fine and the situation is pretty good, but the story itself runs out of fuel the moment we reach the main event.
