Dagon(Review)[Twisted Throwback Thursday]
This week we learned of the unfortunate passing of Stuart Gordon. He was an horror director mainly known for his adaptions of HP Lovecraft. Some of his well known films were Re-Animator, From Beyond, and Dagon
One thing I can say is Stuart Gordon had a way of interpreting HP Lovecraft's universe while remaining faithful to Lovecraft's legacy. Dagon was an adaptation of Lovecraft's tale "The Shadow Over Innsmouth". The premise is about a man and his companions who are on a yacht, and a freak storm causes a shipwreck. The man and his wife go to a nearby island for help, and find the inhabitants are strange in more ways than one. As they seek to escape, the man finds his dreams have become a reality he cannot escape from.
I will say there is a bit of a language barrier as most of the dialog is in Spanish, but you will still get an idea of what is going on. The monster effects were pretty well done, with the exception of some bad CGI, but it's nothing that detracts from the movie itself. As being a Lovecraft film, of course it contains elements of the Cthulhu Mythos that he is famous for.
Definitely recommend checking this out, as well as Stuart Gordon's other films. He put out a lot of great work, and someone will have big shoes to fill in representing HP Lovecraft as well as he did.
