Friday the 13th Retrospective[Twisted Throwback Thursday]
Tomorrow is Friday the 13th, so I thought it would be a good time to discuss about it and how it became one of the most popular horror film franchises of all time.
First, how is it that Friday the 13th got started anyway? Any why was Friday chosen as the day to be associated with the number 13th? When researching the topic, the only answer behind the mystery is had something to do with The Last Supper of Jesus and the 13 apostles. Somehow that started the whole superstition of 13 being unlucky, and Friday was chosen as the significant day due to Friday being the day of Jesus's death.
Since that time, Friday the 13th is always greeted with trepidation and fear. So it would make sense that it would spawn a horror film that featured a masked killed named Jason who stalked teenagers. Surprisingly enough, the first movie hardly featured him at all. We are introduced to the tragedy of Jason, a little boy who drowned when he was supposed to be watched by teenage camp counselors who were too busy doing drugs and having sex. Which explained why he mostly went after teenagers, but he actually did not don his iconic mask until the third movie. Jason stalked and slashed his victim through a total of 12 movies, and he went everywhere. He went to Manhattan, he went to Hell, and he was even in space!! Nowhere was safe.
So how is it that his character became so popular. You would think you would watch a character stalk and slash victims so many times before becoming disinterested. I think what really drew people was his brutality. Unlike Michael Myers who was mainly stalking his sister, or Freddy Krueger who killed people in dreams. Jason was a literal killing machine. He was unflinching and uncaring. All he wanted to do was kill you.
Speaking of Freddy Krueger, he learned firsthand what happens when you piss off the wrong guy. He tries to manipulate Jason into getting people scared enough so Freddy can drag him into his dream world and kill them. But when Jason kills enough people to cause people to fear him instead, Freddy does not like that one bit. He battles Jason, only to have Jason show him the exactly kind of killer he is. As in, he does not give a crap, and he will not take crap from a burned guy with knives for gloves. He ultimately bests Freddy, proving to be the number one killer on the block.
The superstition of Friday the 13th became associated with Jason, and that is even true now. It is common when Friday the 13th comes about, you will see movie marathons, and iconery dealing with the hockey masked killer. It has become an unofficial national past time even though people still regard this day with fear.
So how about yourself? Do you celebrate Friday the 13th? Do you see it as a joyous day or a day to hide under your covers, hoping it will go away? Do you like the Friday the 13th franchise, and if so, which is your favorite movie? Which is your favorite Jason kill moment? Feel free to weigh in below!!
