John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness(Review)[Twisted Throwback Thursday]
Today we are looking at John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness, the second entry of his Apocalypse Trilogy. It is about a priest who discovers a vial of mysterious green liquid that was being kept in the basement of a church and he gathers the top scholars and experts to discover exactly what it is.. What follows is one of the strangest movies in Carpenter's resume and that's saying a lot for a movie that he produced.
We see everything from bugs, creepy homeless people being led by one Alice Cooper, and shared dream messages being transmitted anytime someone falls asleep. And that's even before the mysterious liquid starts infecting people. There's definitely seems to be a theme of having one's faith challenged to the point where everything you thought was truth ends up just being a cover up for something more.
A lot about this movie is enough to unsettle the average viewer, and it's hard to really make sense of what is happening during the initial viewing . This is definitely one of those you have to watch multiple times, and each time you will come up with a new theory to explain everything. The ambiguous ending doesn't help matters either.
You will recognize Carpenter's bit players Donald Pleasance in the role of the priest, and Victor Wong as one of the professors. If you are a fan of 80's horror or just a John Carpenter fan in general, this movie is worthy your while.
With that, if I am not mistaken, this only leaves one movie left in the Apocalypse Trilogy that we haven't covered yet, so stay tuned for that.
