Everybody is aware of the power of “Get Out” at this point. Jordan Peele’s directorial debut is a modern day masterpiece and for good reason - part of that reason belonging to the genius score of Michael Abels.
In interviews, Abels had said that Jordan overall gave him free range for his pieces but provided some explicit direction for what they would encompass – for example a song needing to symbolize a love that is tested by the stars, and another one that needs to sound modern but tribal.
For a teacher, Michael was able to translate his intelligence and perception into an effective score to help accompany one of the most important African horror films in years. The duo would continue to work on the next project “Us” together, and it’s safe to assume that whatever Jordan creates next that Michael will also be attached to.
He is a composer whose work speaks for itself; wonderfully blending contemporary and classic theory into a perfect hybrid.
