John Waters is a recognizable name in the film industry for many reasons. He's been blacklisted by Hollywood for being too perverse and transgressive in an age where people were scared shitless of the changing times. But as the story often goes, he has achieved cult status with a big fanbase through the underground over time.
'Multiple Maniacs' is a twisted little film. We begin by seeing a Depravity circus featuring our star, Lady Divine, and her cavalcade of misfits. People are invited off the streets to see such acts as: a heroin junkie going cold turkey, a man eating his own puke, and homosexual men kissing. The audience shows disgust as we prepare for the showstopper which is Lady Divine herself. She arrives and is booed because of her physical form, and then they rob the audience, kill one, and run. We find out that they do this many times a week to survive.
Afterwards, our story follows Lady Divine and her boyfriend Mr. David as they have a domestic dispute and go their separate ways - only to decide to kill each other.
The film has a simple stoy that becomes diluted with more crass arguments, a sex scene in a church, a murder of the police, and eventually a rampage on the streets.
It's interesting, to say the least. It's easy to see why he has garnered the reputation he has, but the film is really full of shocking images, LSD inspired philosophy, and heated arguments that obviously blew down doors in the early 70s.
If you like your movies to be weird, one of a kind, and of a different taste - then this is for you. I enjoyed it honestly, but im sure most people won't.
'Multiple Maniacs' is now streaming on The Criterion Channel.
