Phenomena(Review)[Twisted Throwback Thursday]
While we are the subject of Italian horror, as a companion piece to yesterday's review, we will be looking at a movie directed by Dario Argento, more specifically a film called Phenomena. It's a movie about a girl with the ability to psychically link with insects, and she helps solve a string of murders occurring at a boarding school she is attending.
The film stars Jennifer Connelly right before she starred in Labyrinth and Donald Pleasance who was gaining notoriety from the Halloween franchise. As most of Argento's films, it is an artsy horror but you can make sense of the plot here. Frequent collaborator Goblin composed some of the music tracks here.
I can relate to Jennifer Connelly's character as she professes her fascination with insects and most people either react in disgust or mock her for it. The scene that was most jarring for me is when she finally tracks down the killer, and she finds a little boy being hidden in the room. She taps his shoulder and he turns around to reveal a face that will haunt your nightmares. The final showdown takes place at a literal lake of fire.
Sadly, the film got edited down and repacked as a film called Creepers when it was originally released in the United States. Thankfully, it can be found in its full version through Tubi. Definitely worth checking out.
Till next time, stay safe and stay scared!
