Stonehurst Asylum(Review)[Terrifying Theatrical Tuesday]

There are those psychological thrillers that induce fear for whole other reasons. What would it be like to be in a scenario where you don't know who to trust, and the people you think you can trust are terrible in other ways. This is exactly what occurs in Stonehurst Asylum, a movie full of twists and turns.

Based on an Edgar Allan Poe story "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether", the plot follows a young doctor who enters the infamous Stonehurst Asylum, and discovers patients going through inhumane treatments and that there is a much more happening than what can be perceived.

From the moment we as the viewers enter the asylum, we can tell something is off. For example, the patients are given free reign, just able to go and do what they please. When the young doctor questions the head doctor about that, we get our next clue when he speaks out against the treatments that the inmates would normally be receiving.

Our young doctor meets Eliza Graves, played expertly by Kate Beckinsale, and she warns him to leave. He does not need her warning, and when he investigates strange noises, he discovers the true nature of the facility. We see the full extent of madness when it is allowed to run unchecked. As we watch the young doctor and Eliza try to escape their plight, it feels like a game of mental chess. The ending is just as baffling when another twist is revealed.

This movie intrigued me with its star studded cast and weaving plot lines. It was brilliant how everything played out and I was not expecting the final twist. I do love mindbending psychological horrors, and I feel many will find lots to enjoy here. Definitely worth checking out if you have yet to do so.
