Superdeep(Review)[Terrifying Theatrical Tuesday]
You have to appreciate horror movies that pay tribute and make you crave horror movies from the 80s. Superdeep is a horror film that does exactly that, including themes based on the Russian menace and including practical effects. It has all the right tricks except for the fact that it is two hours long where it really could have trimmed the fat.
The plot is about a team lead by a scientist named Anna who investigate the Kola Superdeep and discover a terror that threatens all of humanity. What follows is a vision of body horror not unlike what you see in Cronenberg or Carpenter's films. Those scenes turn out to be pretty damn terrifying. The only issue, and this is based on the strange choice to dub Russian to English is the rest of the journey turns out to be meandering and dull. With the exception of Anna, everyone else is basically fodder for the beast .
Watching the movie, you will also be reminded of the Resident Evil and the Last of Us video games. The creature designs in this movie are very darn scary, and Anna has that almost Ripley vibe to her. I question the decision of making her disrobe so she is only wearing a shirt and underwear during the final scenes. A female character can be badass without having to be nearly naked. I suspect this was just fanservice but it was unnecessary.
If you love films such as The Thing, then you will definitely find a lot about this movie to enjoy despite everything else that is wrong with it. If they just cleaned it up a bit, and left it alone, it could have had more potential. There is some still there, however it is not enough to be redeemable. This movie is currently streaming on Shudder, so if you are curious, be sure to check it out. If you already seen Superdeep, feel free to leave your thoughts below!
