This interesting movie puts a very real and terrifying spin on the tradition of family get togethers. We all been there, dealing with relatives and their children. All the noise. Dealing with the headache of it all, quite literally. But what if something happened to the children that takes all of that and escalates it tenfold?? That is a scenario The Children explores.
The movie is about two families who get together for the holidays at a remote cabin in the wilderness. Their children all start getting sick, except this sickness infects their mind more than their body. Before the families know what is happening, they find themselves victims of pint sized terrors of their own flesh and blood.
I will say this is not entirely an enjoyable film to watch. Maybe because it is British, but there's a good bit of child abuse that occurs, and that's outside of what happens once the children become infected. It is also confusing at times. I do like some of the visual styles, like when you get a glimpse of the what the sickness is doing to the kids and how they react to it. Then there is the ending. During this film, there is a teen daughter who is sort of like the final girl and is helping the adults fight against the infected. You are wondering the whole time...the sickness only affects the kids...is there a cutoff as to how old the kids are that it infects. That is a question the movie answers at the very end. I won't say much except if you are curious, watch the movie to find out for yourself.
Definitely something to entertain your brain if you are looking for holiday films and want to see something different. It is streaming on HBO Max is want to check it out. If you have seen The Children, let me know your thoughts below!!
