The Lodge(Review)[Terrifying Theatrical Tuesday]
I can see why The Lodge has been called the top horror film of 2020, and I would be inclined to agree. What this film does so well is show us human monsters and from the most unassuming of what we expect. So often, we see authoritative people portrayed as monsters that when we see the opposite side of that, it's like a breath of fresh air almost. This movie is a reminder that monsters exist in any form. And being that this comes from the same people who gave us Goodnight Mommy, which is a film that already explored this territory, except The Lodge takes that up a notch.
The movie is about a family whose father decides to divorce his wife due to an affair he is having with another woman. The wife doesn't take the news well she is being divorced for another woman, and her response is to commit suicide. Sometime after her death, the father thinks it is a good idea to take everyone to a remote lodge to spend the holidays together with the new woman. Except he gets called to work. The rest of the movie is tension filled as his son and daughter are left in the care of the new woman, and they already hold some resentment towards her as they see her responsible for their mother's death. Can their be some peace and reconciliation between them? That's what we spend time trying to find out.
It would be easier if there wasn't strange happenings dealing with the new woman's past experiences as part of the cult. Suddenly things disappear, and voices are heard throughout the night. You would almost suspect a supernatural presence being responsible for everything that's happening. But there are clues that this isn't the case. And when the ending scenes come, and you realize exactly why what is happening is happening, you will find yourself with two questions. How far would you be willing to go to enact revenge against someone?? And what would do if it backfired on you?
I can't say much more to avoid spoilers, so all I can say if you haven't seen this movie yet, it is very well worth checking out. It may be a bit more slow going than you would prefer, but this is to your benefit so you can catch the clues as to what is actually happening. What can I say, I am a sucker for psychological horror, so if you are too, there is much to enjoy here. If you have already seen The Lodge, feel free to leave your thoughts below!!
