The Mangler(Review)[Twisted Throwback Thursday]
Welcome to The Mangler!!! Come for the campiness, stay for the over-acting, though if there was an award for that, it would go to Robert Englund for sure. He spends most of the film trotting around like a cybernetic geriatric, snarling and leering at the women. He has one of the best lines of the movie when he exclaims "Hells Bells, Adelle!!".
This was a movie many look forward to as it was the first big screen collaboration between Tobe Hooper and Stephen King. After seeing what they accomplished with the Salem's Lot miniseries. The issue though was Salem's Lot was a novel. The Mangler was just a short story. They tried to pad the runtime as much as possible even adding a side plot about a possessed icebox, but the end result was a very underwhelming movie. Even with the star power of Robert Englund and Ted " Buffalo Bill" Levine it wasn't enough to save this movie.
If the idea of a possessed laundry press sounds ridiculous on paper, imagine how that would play out on the silver screen, especially when said laundry press comes to ridiculous CGI life towards the end of the movie. I swear to Gods my soul almost left my body from laughing so hard when during the scene Ted's character is asked "Are you crazy?", and he deadpan responds "No, I'm a policeman!!"
If you want to see full on ridiculousness and get a laugh, The Mangler is for you. It is not entirely terrible, but it's pretty close enough. And if you can believe it, this movie even got a sequel.
Till next time, stay safe and stay scared!! -Tha Thrilla-
