This is a movie that probably not many people paid attention to or had a chance to watch. I was even unsure about it at first, but I can after watching, this movie is much much more than it seems. The premise is about a team of people who are manning a underwater base that without warning self destructs on them. They are left fighting for their own survival as well as fighting against unknown terrors of the deep sea.
This movie gets very intense at points, and it has reminders of other movies such as Cloverfield and Aliens. I know Kristen Stewart gets a bad reputation for her acting ability, but in Underwater I think she did good in playing a proto-Ripley of the crew. TJ Miller plays an exact replica of Hud from the movie Cloverfield, but that's not the only resemblance that this movie has to that universe. But most of all, as you would expect from a movie about unknown deep sea terrors, there are definitely Lovecraftian vibes all throughout, especially towards the end. Because of the movie mostly taking place literally underwater, there are times where it is hard to make out everything that is occurring, and that gives the movie the ability to leave its trump card for last, and what a trump card it is. I can't say anything due to spoilers. but let's say I was majorly geeking out at the end scenes.
I definitely recommend checking this movie if you haven't seen yet as I feel it will leave you just as pleasantly surprised as I was. If you have already seen Underwater, feel free to leave your thoughts below!!
