When Scream first came out, and quickly gained popularity, so did a plethora of copycat movies or movies in the same vein that tried to capitalize on that sweet sweet money. Urban Legend was one of those movies, but even if it was about teens on a school campus being murdered, it at least had some originality with the kills being based on different urban legends.
Surprisingly, this film had some powerhouse actors that appeared, such as a very young Jared Leto, Brad Dourif in a cameo as a stuttering gas station attendant, Robert Englund as the stern professor, and Danielle Harris playing the clichéd goth girl. Joshua Jackson appeared as well, trying to spread his acting wings, and I chuckled at the bit where he is in the car, turns on the radio, and it briefly plays the Dawson Creek theme song before he turns it off.
The breakout character in this movie was Reese, the campus police officer as she is just so nonsense and she even almost saves the day. While you expect police characters to be bumbling idiots in these type of movies, she certainly was not.
It is one of those modern teen slashers that surprisingly holds up even today. It got a sequel called Urban Legends: The Final Cut, which was okay. Definitely give this one a watch if you haven't seen or just want to revisit it.
