What Lies Below(Review)[Terrifying Theatrical Tuesday]

This is a movie that gets super cringy, and that's even before wild reveal at the end. There's really some deep messages waiting below the surface, which the very ironic title suggests.

In this movie, we see a socially awkward 16 year old who goes with her mother to spend time with her, and her mother introduces her to a man who is far too perfect. On the surface, he has no flaws, but underneath, he is harboring some very dark secrets.

At first it's amusing to watch as both the mother and her teen daughter as they fight their obvious attraction to the man. But then it becomes awkward and full of cringe when the man shows affection to both women. And this is where the movie sets up the true terror in store for the audience. Here we have a true nightmare scenario that any mother can relate to, especially when introducing a new man to their children. Is he who he says he is? What if the man you think you trust decides to prey upon your children without your knowledge? Worst of all, what if your child tries to warn you of his nefarious behavior only to be met with disbelief and scorn? All of that is seen within the course of the movie.

Then the ending comes that shows us the monstrous intentions of the man quite literally. If you seen movies such as The Creature of the Black Lagoon, or Humanoids From The Deep, think something along those lines. It's not a very happy ending and very ambiguous to boot.

I became interested in the movie as it hinted at Lovecraftian terrors, and they are sort of there, but I certainly did not expect the stark nature as it explored the other dynamics I mentioned. I feel this is where the movie will get its audience even if the audience will feel uncomfortable. This is the formula for success that most modern horrors seem to lack. Horror is supposed to push the boundaries, make us uncertain and uncomfortable, and teach us lessons we may not be willing to learn.

What Lies Below is currently available to rent on Amazon Prime, and well worth checking out, but I will give you a content warning disclaimer, so just be aware of that. If you have seen this movie, feel free to leave your thoughts below!
